It’s always interesting to see what other people think of our company once we “let them in”. Spend a few hours with us, visit our warehouse, and watch us work for a little while. We’re almost always happy to invite people in for a day because it’s a really beneficial learning experience for both parties.
Oke from LifeIsWhatYouMakeOfIt.com recently decided to leave Houston for an extended weekend and take a road trip through the northeast. I was excited to hear that he wanted to come visit us, so we arranged for him to spend the last few days of his trip up in Albany and then just fly home from here. The entire trip is great reading, but it was particularly interesting to read his post about the days he spent with us.
My favorite two lines:
It didn’t seem like we were working, everyone were wearing gym garments and listening to ’90’s rap.
I met the rest of the crew that morning and helped pull orders. It was super easy to get the orders, with the systems that they had put in place.
Yup, if you order from us there’s a good chance that whomever packs your order will be wearing old mesh shorts and singing Big Pimpin.
It was really encouraging to see how fast Oke picked up on pulling orders. He was interested in helping out, so I very casually taught him over the course of about 2 hours how the system works and by the end of it he definitely could have started doing a few solo. This goes back to what I wrote in the Setting Up Employees For Success post: we’ve put in some pretty efficient systems and it’s been nice to see a few people come along now and pick it up quickly.
Oke is also a great photographer. Here are a few of my favorite pics from the trip – Mike, George, and I at dinner, a view of the Hudson River from downtown Albany, and a few shots of a waterfall a few minutes down the road from my apartment:
