Detailing Day – Yup, We Created Our Own Holiday

In 2011 we started something fun that I realized I have never posted about: we created our own holiday. Why not, right? We’re constantly looking for new promotions to run, and new ways to engage with our customers. So, Detailing Day was born. Like all good holidays, it’s predictably in the same spot on the calendar each year – the Saturday prior to Memorial Day weekend, with the idea being that you’re detailing your car to show off for Memorial Day. There’s almost universally nice… Continue reading

Building The Detailed Image Brand

“Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is, I don’t know which half.” – 1800’s American merchant John Wanamaker When you’re just starting out with an e-commerce business (or any business really), your marketing focus by necessity is primarily direct response ads like AdWords search where you need to see an immediate ROI or you can’t afford to do it. You need to spend $x and see a direct return of $x + something. That’s how we approached marketing in the… Continue reading

Under Armour DETAILER Shirt Gone Viral

Amidst the chaos of the Business Review article and frantically releasing a new site, we rolled out one of our most ambitious and fun projects yet. Last Thursday we launched an Under Armour Detailer Shirt aimed at bringing the detailing community together. At launch we had some of the biggest names in the industry wearing the shirt and promoting it on social media. Here’s the graphic we sent out to our newsletter: You can see more pictures, learn about our social media promotions, and… Continue reading

Inc. 5000 Spam

When we were named to the Inc. 5000, my partners and I wondered what, if anything, would come of it. While did it primarily for ourselves, we also wanted to make the most of a rare opportunity to promote our business outside of the car care world. Somewhat predictably, two things happened: 1) we got a small amount of local press, and 2) we started receiving a massive amount of solicitations via email and phone. It makes sense. The Inc. 5000 list is a great… Continue reading

Why Some of Our Promos Now End at Midnight Pacific Time

I took that screenshot of our home page at 10 AM Eastern Time this morning. If you do the math, our sale actually ends at 3 AM Eastern Time tomorrow (midnight Pacific), instead of midnight Eastern tonight. We started noticing that we were getting complaints from customers in other time zones who were shopping when a sale ended and weren’t able to complete their purchase. It makes sense. If you’re out west and you start shopping at 8:45 PM, you don’t necessarily think “this sale… Continue reading

In-Depth: Boosting Newsletter Sign-Ups With Our Refer a Friend Program

My partners and I have always discussed the possibility of doing some sort of referral program for Detailed Image. We have a very loyal customer base so it would only be natural to give them the ability to earn free products in exchange for referring their friends. We never could quite formulate the right way to do it, so it always sat on the backburner while we tackled other projects. Then last year I came across an article on the Tim Ferriss blog entitled How… Continue reading

LockerPulse as a Google Reader Replacement For Sports Fans?

We’ve been so busy lately with Detailed Image that some of our plans for LockerPulse have taken a backseat. With Google Reader shutting down on July 1, I thought it might be a good idea to do a small push to see if we can’t pick up some of the sports fans who use RSS primarily to consume sports news. I used to use Google Reader for my sports news, but LockerPulse is such an upgrade that I long abandoned that. For my non-sports feeds… Continue reading

Our Custom Built Newsletter System

In December of last year we released a project that we’d been working on for a long time. It’s since saved us countless hours, reduced errors, improved accuracy, and opened the doors for some really unique future opportunities. The project was a complete overhaul of how we perform one of our most critical business processes, one that is one of our largest revenue drivers. Yet none of our customers have noticed. And that’s the way we wanted it. That meant it was a success. From… Continue reading

17 Weeks of Fantasy Football Fun

Football season is a really fun time of the year for LockerPulse. Walk in to our office at lunch time and we’re all using it to catch up on the latest news for our favorite teams and fantasy players. There’s a constant banter of “did you hear that XYZ is hurt?” and “I can’t believe that you didn’t start XYZ yesterday!” For sports fans like myself, LockerPulse is great all year round, but it really shines during football season. Fantasy football is arguably it’s best… Continue reading

Helping Your Employees Succeed

A few months back we started transitioning our Twitter and Facebook management over to our new employee Reece. It’s a perfect compliment to his customer service work. While Facebook has been a huge success for us, Twitter has been only a moderate success. During a meeting that he and I had we discussed ways to better captivate the Twitter audience and take advantage of the immediacy of Twitter as a platform. A few minutes in he had an idea: what if every Thursday we do… Continue reading
